Doping: CAS decision on Friday for Chinese swimmer Sun Yang

– Published on:

The Sports Arbitral Tribunal (CAS) will make its decision Friday concerning the Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, accused of destroying a blood sample with a hammer and who faces up to eight years of suspension.

The decision will be made public at 10:00 am (09:00 GMT), the CAS said in a statement on Thursday.

Three times Olympic champion in London-2012 and Rio-2016 and winner of eleven world titles between 2011 and 2019, Sun Yang, considered as one of the great stars of Chinese sport, had appeared on November 15 in public audience before the CAS.

An explosive report from the International Swimming Federation (Fina) anti-doping committee, written in January 2019, confirmed that the swimmer had destroyed in September 2018 his own blood sample with a hammer during an unexpected test.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed to the CAS after the International Swimming Federation (Fina) whitewashed Sun Yang on a defect in form, which allowed the 27-year-old swimmer to participate in the Gwangju World Championships, in South Korea, at the end of July 2019, where several swimmers had expressed dissatisfaction with his presence.
