How the city of Vienna wants to reward climate protection experts with an App

The City of Vienna wants to digitally link mobility, climate protection and culture with an app. Climate-friendly behavior should be rewarded with free tickets. Critics fear surveillance.

It is not that Vienna’s climate-friendly movement is made very difficult. On the contrary: compared to other metropolises – such as Berlin – the cycle path network is exemplary. Annual ticket holders can use buses, S-, U- and trams around the clock for one euro a day. And at the push of a button, the new app from the local public transport companies operating under the “Wiener Linien” not only spits out the travel times of urban public transport to the destination but also how long the journey alternatively takes by bike – with your own or with a rented bike.

In the future, there should be even more incentives for leaving the car at home. For a few days now, test operations with a new app have been running. After all, Austria’s capital sees itself not only as a “climate model city”, but also as a digital laboratory.
