Coronavirus, Lombardy and Veneto: “All closed for two weeks except food and pharmacies”. Conte does not rule out more stringent Measures

The governors Fontana and Zaia ask for a further tightening of the measures to contain the epidemic: We also stop public transport. Today the request to the government. Intensive care cannot bear such a frenzied growth of infections

There is good news, coronavirus infections continue to drop in the red area of Lodigiano. This is the way, drastically limiting social contacts “, so the president of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, confirming that he asked the government, together with the 12 mayors of the provincial capitals of the region, to further tighten the measures:” The closure non-essential commercial activities and local public transport “. On the same line, the governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia: Rather than prolonging an agony that lasts for months – he said -, I think it is better to arrive at a total closure, to definitively block the infection. It is a line of thought that is turning and I think it will be discussed today because it is essential to isolate the virus, and the slower the rate of infection, the more breath we give to our healthcare facilities.

Still the Lombard governor: I hope that these appeals that come from different parts of the world of Lombardy, from the mayors to the entrepreneurs to the unions, can be carefully evaluated by the Government, which will have to meet tomorrow morning and has declared that it will be able to consider new more stringent measures linked to the situation in Lombardy “. Fontana’s feeling, however, is that “it is still not clear to everyone, colleagues from the Regions and some government representatives, the real situation we are experiencing in Lombardy”. from mayors to entrepreneurs to unions, they can be carefully evaluated by the government, which will meet tomorrow morning and has declared that it will be able to consider new, more rigorous measures linked to the situation in Lombardy “. Fontana’s feeling, however, is that “it is still not clear to everyone, colleagues from the Regions and some government representatives, the real situation we are experiencing in Lombardy”.

During the confrontation in Palazzo Chigi between President Conte, ministers Gualtieri, D’Incà and Undersecretary Fraccaro, on the one hand, and the leaders of the opposition forces Salvini, Meloni, Tajani, accompanied by their respective group leaders, concerning the request to introduce even more severe measures to combat the infection, which include a general lockout, the Prime Minister has not at all excluded the possibility of adopting more restrictive measures, where necessary. I assure you that the government will continue to remain available and resolute, as it has always done so far, to take all the necessary measures to combat the spread of the infection with the utmost rigor and to update these measures constantly. We will continue to collect the requests of the territorial administrators, as we do with daily video conferencing, and we will continue to base the assessments of the technical-scientific committee as the basis for our autonomous political decisions.

The hot front in Veneto, and especially in Lombardy, remains the seal of the hospital system, which is now almost at the limit. Lombard health is preparing for new ICU beds but “we are reaching the maximum limits”, warned Fontana, specifying that “a few days, maybe a week” can be expected in which “an adequate response can be given to everyone. But we must make sure that the number of those who become infected begins to decrease. In the meantime, new spaces are also being sought: “There are hospitals”, which have recently been closed, “which can be redeveloped” and also “the Milan Fair has already made space available”.

Giulio Gallera, the Lombardy regional councilor for health, had further raised the alarm level coming from the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic in the morning: of the virus, experts say – he pointed out -. Because we other 15 or 20 days with such a frenzied growth of people in the emergency rooms and intensive care units do not stand them, Lombardy does not hold them and Italy does not hold them.

We had already asked to close all commercial activities – explains Gallera – because if I go out to go to work I can’t stop shopping. But perhaps the time has come to tighten the measures even more. Gallera then specified that those of necessities, such as supermarkets and pharmacies “will always remain open, even if all the rest of the production activities are closed”, therefore “there is no need” to queue.

The President of the Region, Attilio Fontana, also reiterates the need for even more drastic, however traumatic measures: “It is a time of firmness – he writes on his Facebook page -. I met the mayors of the Lombard capitals and the president of Anci Lombardia, they all ask the same thing: close everything now (except the essential services) to start again as soon as possible. The half measures, we have seen in recent weeks, do not serve to contain this emergency. And again: For the moment we are managing to keep up with all needs and requirements, but we cannot resist for much longer. We need a turnaround, that people stop the spread of this contagion, we need the numbers to start to decrease, a greater awareness on the part of everyone.

But since consciences need to be helped, the Lombard government is considering stopping all activities for two weeks through, says the Welfare Councilor, a “possible very hard measure”.

The leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, also follows the same line:  In Codogno isolation worked, it’s good news. But for it to work throughout Italy, all activities must be closed, except for those of vital public necessity, for two / three weeks, with a guarantee of total economic coverage by the State, Europe, and the ECB, and on this, we will try to convince the government”.
