Orban dismisses EU criticism with a swipe at the “Brussels bubble”

Hungary's Prime Minister Orban does not like to hear that when the EU expresses its concerns about the rule of law because of the restrictions on freedom of expression and the press in his country. He is angry.

Budapest – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban dismissed the criticism of the European Union (EU) about his authoritarian course in the Corona crisis as the work of a so-called “Brussels bubble”.

«What is Brussels doing? With us. », He said on the state radio. «You could save lives with cooperation. That would be necessary now. I don’t know what kind of people are in the “Brussels bubble”, he added.

The right-wing national head of government had Monday granted the Parliament extensive special powers to deal with the corona pandemic. They enable him to govern by ordinance without a time limit and possibly without parliamentary control. The emergency law had sparked criticism and concern at home and abroad, especially since Orban had tended to rule out authoritarianism in the past ten years of his tenure.

On Thursday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke directly about the controversial Corona emergency measures in Hungary and expressed her concern. If necessary, the EU Commission will act, said the German politician in Brussels.
