Rhineland-Palatinate increases the number of women’s shelters

Experts predict an increase in domestic violence in the corona crisis. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has therefore increased the number of places in the women's shelters.

The number of calls from women in need of counseling centers and emergency calls has not yet risen. “However, the experience from China, Italy, and France shows that this can be expected.” According to experts, the limitations of life, existential worries, and confined spaces could lead to aggression – especially in families whose coexistence is already very conflict-ridden or even overshadowed by violence.

Advice also on the phone and online

Some women’s shelters, as well as women’s emergency calls, also offer telephone advice or online advice. Children and adolescents in need would find it even more difficult than women to get help during these times. Among other things, the free telephone number against the number 116 111 is suitable for them.

In the summer, an 18th women’s shelter with eleven places is to open in Andernach. The other 17 have between 4 and 13 places for women – regardless of the number of their children. “The crisis makes it clear that we do not have enough places in women’s shelters in Rhineland-Palatinate and that they need to be expanded.” The tight housing market also means that women stay in facilities longer than necessary.
