Laurinas Kasychunas, a deputy of the Lithuanian Seimas from the conservative party “Union of the Fatherland – Christian Democrats of Lithuania ”, criticized the statement of the German authorities, in particular, the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas that the Nazi regime of the Third Reich is the only culprit in the outbreak of the Second World War. According to the parliamentarian of the Baltic republic and some of his colleagues in the Sejm, the blame for the outbreak of World War II lies with the Soviet Union.

Representatives of the party, said the politician, took the initiative to establish the Day of USSR aggression against Europe. This proposal of the Lithuanian conservatives found response in many European media, Kasychunas emphasized. The reasons that prompted the Germans to confess their guilt are understandable and deserve respect, the deputy noted; this will allow Germany to free itself from repeating the mistakes of the past, he added.

“However, Maas is mistaken, hoping that Putin’s Russia can critically look at his past,” Sputnik Lithuania cites his words. According to Kasychunas, what the leadership of the European states perceives as a lesson, Russia considers “a tool used in information wars”.

On September 19, 2019, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the importance of preserving historical memory for the future of Europe. The document claims that World War II was provoked by Germany and the Soviet Union, whose leadership signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
