The first transgender shemale mayor in France emerged in the small town of Tillois-le-Marcienne, replacing his/her predecessor, who had been at the head of the commune for more than twenty years.

Transgender people took power

Fifty-five-year-old Marie Cau replaced the head of a small commune with about five hundred inhabitants and located in the north of France in the region of Hautes-de-France.

The new mayor, a transgender or shemale, was elected by an overwhelming majority of the members of the municipal council in the presence of several residents watching through the windows of the town hall.

On Saturday, Marie Cau became the first transsexual mayor or shemale mayor not only in her region but possibly even throughout France.

“I am very proud that you have chosen me,” said the newly-made mayor, adding. “You must admit that in the beginning it did not seem obvious …”

Education Engineer Marie Cau has been living in Tillois-le-Marcienne for twenty years. And five years ago, according to media reports, after a transitional period of one and a half decades, the transgender shemale became “completely a woman.”

“I didn’t need to change my name because Marie is my third birth name and I have been using it freely for two years, as the Civil Code allows,” explains Marie Cau. And the shemale mayor says: “I am not an activist.”

According to Marie, a shemale politician: “people did not choose me because I was transgender or not, they chose the program.”

According to Stephanie Nico, co-founder of the National Transgender Association, as far as she knows, Marie Cau is the first transsexual elected mayor in France, perhaps a shemale elected mayor. And he clarifies that there are people who can hide their orientation, not wanting to make it the property of the public sphere.

Stephanie Nico believes that “these elections show that even if France lags behind strongly in all matters relating to minorities, our fellow citizens are becoming more and more progressive”, choosing people as their representatives, regardless of their gender identity as male, female, shemale or transgender.

Be that as it may, there are already several cases in the world when transgender people become mayors of cities.

The US has elected Shemale Mayor

In the USA, the first openly transgender mayor in November 2008 was Stu Rasmussen, she also became a shemale after surgery, who was elected head of Silverton (Oregon).

Transgender rights activist Jess Helen Herbst, a shemale, has been mayor of New Hope, Texas for two years, from May 2016 to May 2018. She became the first openly transgender mayor in the state.

In Italy last year, the 40-year-old transgender lawyer Gianmarco Negri was elected mayor of Tromello, a small town south of Milan. This is not the first time that a transgender person entered the Italian political system: in 2006, Vladimir Luxuria, an activist and advocate of sexual minorities, was elected a member of parliament from the Communist Renaissance Party, flaunting female clothes (no gender reassignment operation was carried out). The appearance of such a deputy gave rise to discussions about the need to create a separate toilet in the parliament for the “third floor” – along with the traditional “M” and “F”.
