Earlier, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that statements by US officials are riddled with a sense of superiority and permissiveness.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a former CIA chief, notified Congress of the abolition of Hong Kong’s autonomy from China and accused Beijing of violating the 1997 Sino-British Declaration.

“Today I notified Congress that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China, given the situation on the ground. The USA supports the people of Hong Kong, ”Pompeo wrote on his Twitter.

Pompeo’s statement is due to the fact that the draft National Security Act, developed specifically for Hong Kong, has been included in the agenda of the National People’s Congress(NPC). This document contains a ban on subversive and separatist activities and is also directed against terrorism and extremism. Among other things, the law includes bans on all forms of incitement aimed at overthrowing the central government and outside interference.

An informed source told the South China Morning Post that the central government of China has concluded that the Hong Kong Legislature is not in a position to pass the bill due to the region’s political climate. For this reason, the consideration of the document was transferred to the NPC. At the same time, the head of the autonomy, Carry Lam, supported the decision and said that the adoption of the law will not affect the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents.

However, the American leadership has a completely different view of the situation. “Beijing’s catastrophic decision is just the last in a series of actions that fundamentally undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms, as well as China’s own promises to the Hong Kong people in accordance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration, an international treaty signed by the UN,” said Pompeo in a statement. – No sane person can say today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given the facts on the ground … Whereas previously the United States hoped that a free and prosperous Hong Kong would become a model for authoritarian China, it is now clear that China is modeling Hong Kong after for itself.”

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry made it clear that it fully supports Beijing and considers the situation in Hong Kong as an internal affair of China. The head of the Russian diplomatic department, Sergey Lavrov, noted that “statements by US officials are permeated with a sense of superiority and permissiveness.”
