The S-500 “Prometheus” anti-aircraft missile system is capable of shooting down targets in near space. The Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper was informed about this by the commander of the VKS, Colonel-General Sergei Surovikin.
“The characteristics laid down in the S-500 air defense system make it possible to destroy … hypersonic weapons of all modifications, including in the near space,” a senior military official said.
Surovikin said that the main task of the complex will be the destruction of medium-range ballistic missiles and warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles. If necessary, Prometheus will be able to eliminate hypersonic gliding blocks, planes, satellites in low orbits, and space strike systems. According to the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, there are no analogs to the Russian complex in the world.

The S-500 “Prometheus” air defense system has been developed by the Almaz-Antey company since the mid-2000s. According to open sources, the radius of the 40H6 anti-aircraft missile is 400 kilometers, while the more powerful 77N6 missiles, designed to intercept warheads and satellites, can hit targets at distances up to 600 kilometers.
