Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden condemned the dictatorial regime of Alexander Lukashenko and the actions of the authorities during the latest anti-government rallies and said that he would try to expand the sanctions list against the Belarusian authorities if he becomes president. He said this during the last video message.
“I continue to support the people of Belarus and support their democratic aspirations. I also condemn the monstrous violations of human rights committed by the Lukashenka regime. No leader who tortures his own people can ever claim legitimacy. Therefore, the international community should significantly expand sanctions against Lukashenka’s supporters and freeze offshore accounts where they keep their stolen wealth,” Biden explained.
He also said that, if elected, he would cooperate with his European colleagues to “draw up a plan of economic support for a truly sovereign, democratic Belarus.”
Biden supported the oppositionist Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and the people of Belarus in their calls to peacefully hand over power, hold free and fair elections, and release all political prisoners.
