At least 27 people have been killed in a strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea yesterday. The magnitude 7 earthquake shook the Turkish city of Izmir.
Rescuers are now working hard to rescue people from the rubble of houses that collapsed in Turkey. Officials in Izmir on the west coast of Turkey say that at least 25 have died in the area, according to Reuters , and collapsed at least twenty buildings.
Reuters reporters in the area say a mother and her four children are among those trapped in the rubble of houses in Izmir.
Numerous aftershocks have occurred and they have come down on rescue efforts. Authorities say hundreds of people have been rescued from the rubble. At least 800 people are said to have been injured in the quake in Turkey.
Nearly 4,000 people are involved in rescue operations, using excavators and bulldozers, as well as dogs being used to search for people in the rubble.
Two teenagers died on the Greek island of Samos when a wall fell on them.
The quake’s epicenter was reported off the coast of Turkey, at a depth of 21 kilometers, according to the US Department of Earth Sciences.
