Armenian President Armen Sarkissian appealed to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin with a request to help return to the country the prisoners of war held by Azerbaijan. This is stated in the message on Sargsyan’s website .
“The letter addressed to Putin, in particular, says that the Armenian society and the diaspora are deeply concerned about the situation around the military and civilians who are captured by Azerbaijan,” the press service of the Armenian leader said.
He noted that the mediation of the President of Russia will be of great help in resolving this extremely sensitive issue.
On November 28, Sargsyan went on a private visit to Moscow. He met with representatives of the Armenian community and Russian public organizations. The press service of the President of Armenia noted that during the meeting he touched upon the latest events around Artsakh (another name for Nagorno-Karabakh) and the situation in Armenia.
The exchange of prisoners is stipulated by the agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. It was signed on November 10 by Vladimir Putin, his counterpart from Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and Prime Minister of the Armenian government Nikol Pashinyan.
