Turkey welcomed the adoption by the UN Security Council, on Friday, of a resolution allowing the extension of the mechanism for the delivery of cross-border humanitarian aid to Syria for a year from the “Gilwa Gozo” crossing in southern Turkey opposite the “Bab al-Hawa” crossing on the Syrian side.

A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that the resolution adopted by the Security Council for a period of 12 months will be implemented for an additional 6 months on the basis of the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations after the first six months.

The statement touched on the importance of the Jilwa Gozo crossing, adding: “The United Nations aid sent through our border crossing is essential for the continuation of an effective response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria and for regional stability and security.”

“Therefore, we welcome the continuation of the effective United Nations cross-border humanitarian aid delivery mechanism in order to meet the needs of the Syrian people through Turkey,” he said.

The statement pointed out that Turkey is waiting for the Security Council and international actors to take constructive steps and consensual positions to find a lasting solution to the Syrian crisis.

He stressed that Turkey will continue its strong support to fight the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and will continue to actively contribute to maintaining the ceasefire and advancing the political process.

Earlier on Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution allowing to extend the mechanism for the delivery of cross-border humanitarian aid to Syria for a period of one year from the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Turkish border.

The “Gilwa Gozo” crossing, opposite the “Bab al-Hawa” crossing, is of great importance, as it is the only one open between Turkey and Syria at present.
