Dozens of demonstrators participated, on Tuesday, in a vigil in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, to reject the parliament’s decision to withdraw confidence from the government.
The demonstrators chanted slogans denouncing the decision to withdraw confidence and considering it “void”, including, “The people want to bring down the parliament,” “The Tobruk parliament does not represent me,” and “dropping the parliament is a national duty.”
The demonstrators praised the role of Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, chanting slogans in support of him.
This stand comes after the parliament announced by a majority approval to withdraw confidence from the national unity government headed by Dabaiba.
Subsequently, the Supreme Council of State declared that this step was “void” because its procedures violated the Constitutional Declaration and the Political Agreement.
Tensions between the institutions of governance in Libya have recently resurfaced; As a result of differences between the House of Representatives on the one hand, and the Supreme Council of State, the Government of National Unity and the Presidential Council on the other hand, especially over electoral powers and laws.
This threatens the political breakthrough that Libya has witnessed for months; On March 16, an elected transitional authority, comprising a unity government and a presidential council, assumed its duties to lead the country to parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24.
Meanwhile, retired General Khalifa Haftar is still acting in isolation from the legitimate government, and he leads an armed militia that controls many areas, and he calls himself the “Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army”, contesting the Presidential Council’s powers.
