Algeria called on the African Union to act to stop the wave of military coups on the continent and to promote democracy in its countries.
This came in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Wednesday evening, in response to the coup attempt, which the Sudanese authorities announced thwarted in the country on Tuesday morning.
The statement said, “At a time when the African peoples considered that the era of coups and unconstitutional changes had passed on the continent, the brotherly Sudan recently witnessed a failed coup attempt, which Algeria strongly condemns and condemns.”
He added that Algeria calls on the President of the African Union, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, to intensify efforts to ensure the strengthening of the process of democratization in Africa.
The statement urged member states to “adhere to the basic principles of the African Union, in particular rejecting any unconstitutional change of government or any forceful seizure of power to ensure respect for the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of states.”
And on Tuesday, Sudanese Defense Minister Lieutenant-General Yassin Ibrahim revealed that the leader of the coup attempt is Major General Abdul-Baqi Al-Hassan Othman Bakrawi, along with 22 other officers of different ranks, non-commissioned officers and soldiers.
Before Sudan, Mali and Guinea witnessed, during the past months, two coups against Presidents Bah Ndao and Alpha Conde, respectively, by senior officers in the armies of the two countries.
