Qatari Prime Minister Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and President of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, discussed, on Sunday, the operation of Qatari capital in the region and all of Iraq.

This came in a meeting between them in the Qatari capital, Doha, according to a statement issued by the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

The statement said that “the meeting discussed the early Iraqi parliament elections (a week ago), expectations for the future of the political process in Iraq, strengthening the relations of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with Qatar, especially in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture and tourism, and direct flights by Qatar Airways to the Kurdistan region and Iraq.”

The two sides stressed, according to the statement, the “strengthening of the relations of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with Qatar,” and they discussed opportunities to operate Qatari capital and investments in the region to extend from it to all of Iraq as a larger market, especially in the areas needed by the region and Iraq, in addition to discussing steps to open a Qatari consulate in Erbil.

The statement stated that the two sides also discussed, in their discussions, “the latest developments in confronting terrorism, the threats and danger posed by ISIS, ways and means of confronting terrorism and extremist ideology, and the conditions of refugees in the Al-Hol camp in Syria.”

Barzani had arrived on Saturday evening to the Qatari capital, Doha, on an official visit, an undisclosed duration.

Iraqi officials are looking to attract Arab and foreign capital to rebuild the country, which has had successive wars, the last of which was against the terrorist “ISIS” between 2014 and 2017.
