On Sunday, the Grand Mufti of Lebanon, Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian , called for taking measures to restore relations with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, warning against “staying outside the Arab embrace.”
This came in a statement by the Mufti of Lebanon, on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of Independence Day, which falls on November 22 of each year.
Derian said: “Things can only be straightened under the ceiling of a cabinet session, and adherence to the constitution and order.”
On October 13, the cabinet meeting was postponed indefinitely, due to the insistence of ministers affiliated with the “Hezbollah” and “Amal” movement (two Shiites) to discuss the investigation file of the port explosion, with a desire to disqualify the judicial investigator, Judge Tariq Al-Bitar, after he was accused By “politicizing”.
The Grand Mufti of Lebanon called for “taking the necessary measures to rearrange and restore relations with the Arab brothers, especially Saudi Arabia and the Arab Gulf states. Otherwise, the country will remain outside the Arab embrace, and this negatively affects the homeland and the citizen.”
On October 29 last, Riyadh withdrew its ambassador in Beirut and asked the Lebanese ambassador to leave, and this was done later by the Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Yemen, against the background of statements by the Lebanese Minister of Information, George Kordahi .
Prior to Qardahi’s appointment as Minister of Information on September 10, he said in a televised interview recorded on August 5, and broadcast by one of the electronic platforms of the Qatari “Al-Jazeera” satellite channel on October 25, that the Houthis in Yemen are “defending themselves against the attacks of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.”
Derian added: “This year’s independence anniversary comes while Lebanon and its people are living in a state of pain, deprivation, and a living tragedy unparalleled in its history, despite the efforts made by the government and its patient and steadfast president until now in the face of the storms that afflict it from all sides.”
For two years, the Lebanese have been experiencing an unprecedented severe economic crisis that has led to a record collapse in the value of the local currency against the dollar, as well as a shortage of fuel and medicine, and the collapse of the purchasing power of the citizen.
