Sudan.. The United Nations calls for the release of all detainees

The head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Sudan, Volker Peretz, welcomed the release of 4 political detainees, calling for the release of all detainees.

Peretz said in a tweet on his Twitter account: “It is good to release Yasser Arman, Omar Al-Daqeer, Ali Al-Reeh Al-Sanhouri, and a friend of Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi.”

Volcker added, “But if the political agreement is taken seriously, all detainees must be released immediately.”

Those released are Yasser Arman (former political advisor to the prime minister), Omar Al-Daqeer (chairman of the Congress Party), Ali Al-Rayeh Al-Sanhouri (chairman of the Baath Party), and Siddiq Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi (a leader in the Umma Party).

And earlier on Monday, a high-ranking Sudanese military source revealed that the country’s authorities have begun releasing political detainees who have been detained since October 25.

There is no announced figure by the Sudanese authorities about the number of detainees in Sudan since the actions of the General Commander of the Army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, but opponents of these measures estimate the number in the hundreds.

On October 25, a severe crisis erupted in Sudan, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, declared a state of emergency, dissolved the Sovereignty Councils and the Transitional Ministers and dismissed the governors, after the arrest of party leaders, ministers and officials, within measures described by political forces as a “military coup”. .

However, the army chief and the head of the transitional government, Abdullah Hamdok, signed a new political agreement, on Sunday evening, stipulating the latter’s return to his position about a month after his dismissal, and the release of detainees.
