The United Nations announces support for efforts to build an inclusive and just society in Afghanistan

On Thursday, the United Nations announced its commitment to support efforts to build an inclusive and just society in Afghanistan.

This came according to a statement by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary A.DiCarlo , following the end of her 3-day visit to Afghanistan.

“The United Nations is committed to the people of Afghanistan and will continue to support efforts to build an inclusive, just, and peaceful society, especially as the political turmoil has contributed to creating a difficult humanitarian situation,” the statement said.

“The United Nations has been working in Afghanistan since 1949, and it does not intend to abandon the Afghan people,” the statement added.

The UN official said: “I met in Kabul (December 7-9) a group of Taliban representatives, political figures, women leaders, members of civil society, and the diplomatic corps.”

She explained: “I had a frank discussion about what needs to be done to establish an inclusive Afghan state that fulfills its human rights obligations and is a firm partner in suppressing terrorism.”

She continued, “I discussed with senior Taliban representatives ensuring the participation of all Afghans in government and public life (..) There is a serious and understandable concern about the situation of women in Afghanistan.”

Rosemary further said, “I also discussed the developments in the humanitarian situation, especially since many Afghans are on the brink of starvation, in addition to the deterioration of basic services after the Taliban seized power.”

Rosemary A.DiCarlo said: “Work continues with international financial institutions to prevent a complete economic and social collapse in Afghanistan,” according to the same statement.

And in the middle of last August, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan completely , paralleling the last stage of a US military withdrawal from the country that was completed at the end of the same month.
