Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose country chairs the G7 this year, said he was considering a visit to Ukraine after receiving an invitation from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy .
“Currently there is no decision regarding my visit to Ukraine,” he said, speaking in parliament.
“I will consider such a possibility in light of various circumstances and conditions,” he added, without going into details.
Along with other G7 members, Japan imposed sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and bolstered its support for Kiev, including taking the rare step of providing asylum to those fleeing the conflict.
Although Kisida spoke with Zelenskyyy several times, they did not meet in person.
The Ukrainian leader invited his Japanese counterpart to his country during a telephone conversation on January 6. It will be the first time in post-war history that a Japanese prime minister will visit a country in active conflict.
