The International Olympic Committee has said the sporting sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus in connection with the invasion of Ukraine are non-negotiable.
In particular, we are talking about bans for Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions under the flags of their countries.
Russian Olympic Committee chief Stanislav Pozdnyakov said earlier that athletes representing Russia should compete under the same conditions as their rivals from other countries.
Pozdnyakov’s statement came amid growing discontent over a possible participation of Russian athletes in the Paris Olympics in 2024.
“Sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian state and government are not under discussion,” the IOC spokesman said. “They were unanimously confirmed at the recent Olympic summit on December 9.”
