vocabulary of war

media begins Dictionary of War series. Journalist and philologist Ksenia Turkova will regularly talk about the main words, phrases and memes associated with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Let’s start with the letter A. What is the meme phrase “What happened?” And what does this have to do with war?

Skill

“In 2022, nine Russian airlines halted flights,” reports Kommersant. “Authorities have reduced flights to Primorye due to engine repair issues,” RBC writes. This is only the tip of the iceberg that will have to face the Russian aeronautical industry, which is increasingly subject to Western sanctions.

“Russian airlines will increasingly operate in a mode where two or three things are not working, which creates a much higher level of risk. Western aviation would never allow airlines to fly with this level of disruption. It poses too many security risks,” says David Woods, professor of systems engineering integration at Ohio State University.

What is the passenger airline industry waiting for and when will it become really dangerous to fly in Russia? The experts answer.

NATO

The US State Department said, without giving further details, that it expects Sweden and Finland to join NATO “as soon as possible”.

“We hope to be able to welcome Sweden and Finland into NATO as soon as possible,” Deputy Foreign Minister Vedant Patel said.

“We believe they are ready to join NATO,” Patel said. – They are ready to become members of NATO. Both countries, Sweden and Finland, are members of NATO’s Partnership for Peace and Partnerships for Increased Opportunities. These are countries whose armed forces are already working in harmony with the forces of the alliance.

However, Ankara’s position remains the main obstacle on the way to Stockholm and Helsinki to join the Alliance. “Our position on Finland is positive, but it is not on Sweden,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his speech to parliamentarians.

Sweden and Finland applied to join the transatlantic defense alliance last year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine , but faced unexpected resistance from Turkey and have been trying to win its support ever since.

The three countries reached an agreement in June on how to proceed, but Ankara suspended talks in January after tensions escalated following a protest in Stockholm in which a Quran was burned by a far-right Danish politician.
