Last year, the Russian auto industry recorded its worst performance since the collapse of the Soviet Union, with Western sanctions and the departure of global automakers tightening the market and causing production to fall by 67%.
According to Rosstat, Russian factories produced 450,000 cars in 2022.
Until 2022, the worst year for car production in Russia after the collapse of the USSR in 1991 was 2009. Then, after the global financial crisis, Russian factories produced around 600,000 cars, according to data from the analysis agency ASM-Holding.
Russia’s auto industry is struggling under the influence of sanctions imposed by Western countries following the introduction of tens of thousands of Russian troops into Ukraine in February last year.
