The United States sees evidence that the PRC is exploring the possibility of supplying Russia with deadly weapons for use in the war in Ukraine, and has warned Beijing of the consequences.
So said Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
“Of course we have reason to be concerned,” Sherman said in an interview with media.
She declined to give details, when asked if there was evidence that Beijing was exploring the possibility of sending lethal aid to Moscow.
The second-tier State Department official said the United States had directly warned China of the consequences.
“If the People’s Republic of China provides lethal assistance to Russia, it will, in many ways, become a co-belligerent, and there will be consequences,” Sherman told media.
Days after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his country was suspending its participation in the START-3 treaty, Washington said Moscow appeared to be faking it and condemned the move as “irresponsible”.
“We don’t believe President Putin will use nuclear weapons,” Sherman said.
