The United States Space Agency (NASA) will appoint Nicola Fox to head the agency’s science programs.
This was reported by two sources familiar with the decision.
Fox is currently the head of the heliophysics department.
A former principal investigator for the Parker Solar Probe solar mission, Fox will be named NASA’s deputy administrator for science mission control this week, said two people who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Fox will head NASA’s science office, which has an annual budget of about $7 billion. Among the agency’s best-known science programs are searching for traces of life on Mars and studying distant galaxies using the James Webb Space Telescope.
Fox will also be in charge of the NASA research team, formed in 2022 and assisting the US military in analyzing information on suspected UFOs.
Fox will succeed Thomas Zurbuchen, a Swiss-American astrophysicist who led the department from 2016 until his resignation in December.
