Turkey and Syria began to gradually approach each other. Russia’s mediation has also made a significant contribution to this process. This was announced by the rector of the Turkish University of Altynbash, Erhan Chagry, during the Middle East conference of the Valdai club. The information is provided by the publication Arguments and Facts.
According to him, a meeting of representatives of Ankara and Damascus was supposed to take place in the territory of the Russian capital, but the earthquake that hit the countries changed all plans. “I think that because of that, as well as because of the elections in Turkey, it won’t happen until the summer,” the expert suggested.
Islamic University professor Azad Barzegar Kayhan also said that the success of the negotiations between Turkey and Syria will be largely due to the “Astana” format. He stressed: the sooner the leaders of the two countries see each other, the better.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara still could not approve Sweden’s NATO membership. Read more about this in the article from the public press service.
