A senior Ukrainian army officer described the situation around Bakhmut as “extremely tense”.
Above the city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, fierce fighting opposes Ukrainian and Russian forces.
“Despite heavy losses, the enemy sent the most trained Wagner assault units to try to break through the defenses of our troops and encircle the city,” said Alexander Syrsky, commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, on the social networks.
In his evening speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyyyy said the situation around Bakhmut was “getting more and more complicated”.
According to him, the Russian forces “are constantly destroying everything that can serve to protect our positions, to consolidate them and to defend them”.
Reuters reported that Russian forces made progress from the north and south in an attempt to encircle the city and block the Ukrainian forces stationed there.
