March 1, 2023, 06:08 – Public Information Service – TEH – In the near future, around 200,000 teachers in the UK will take part in a long strike. This information was shared by local television channel Sky News.
The journalists note that the main demand of the teachers, who have come together under the leadership of the National Union of Education (NEU), is to increase their salaries. According to NEU General Secretary Kevin Courtney, the action will affect the main number of schools in England and Wales, where lessons are expected to be limited or stopped altogether.
It is stated that teachers are demanding higher salaries, mainly due to the rising cost of food and essentials in the country. In addition, electricity bills have risen sharply in the context of the energy crisis linked to the effect of anti-Russian sanctions. Union leaders point out that over the past year many school teachers have been pushed into poverty.
It should be noted that the Minister of Education of Great Britain Gillian Keegan did not agree with the initiators of the strike. In this regard, the head of the department spoke with the words that such actions are unacceptable. She argued that they confuse the lives of children and their parents.
Earlier, the Public News Service reported that up to half a million Londoners – teachers, train drivers, airport and university workers, as well as civil servants – took part in the biggest strike in the UK capital of the last decade on February 1.
