The volumes of waste in Asian and African landfills have tripled in the last 20 years due to the old clothes that the EU provides to countries in the region in the form of humanitarian aid, writing fbm.tu portal with a link to the German edition of Der Spiegel.
The opinion that has developed in European society that donations of old clothes can benefit residents of third countries is wrong. This conclusion was drawn by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
In recent years, hundreds of tonnes of textiles have been supplied by EU countries to Africa and Asia. Around 46% of used clothing in the EU is in Africa and around 41% in Asia.
Old textiles from Europe are either resold or recycled in the countries of this region. Anything that for some reason cannot be sold or processed is sent to landfills, which are growing every day.
