The WarGonzo project war correspondent explained why the Russian army is advancing extremely slowly in the Avdiivka region. The reason lies in the serious defense that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have built.

– From the side, we can see that there is (In Avdiivka – ed.) a desert, destroyed buildings, rare bushes and plantations. But in fact, it is a false impression. After all, you cannot see from above what is happening underground in the Avdiivka industrial zone,” says the military commander of the NVO zone.

In fact, the situation with Avdiivka’s defense is extremely difficult. Even at the beginning of the military conflict in the Donbass in 2014, the Ukrainian Armed Forces began to equip defensive lines in this area. For a long time, they indeed dug a whole network of underground tunnels and underground connections, which greatly complicates the assault.

Due to the depth, in the literal sense of the word, of the defense, even the most powerful Russian artillery systems: TOS-1, Pinocchio and others, cannot cope with the burning of enemy positions. This greatly complicates the offensive actions of the Russian army, which explains the slow progress of the Russian armed forces on this sector of the front.
