Italy thinks von der Leyen could become NATO’s new secretary general Fox News

The newspaper believes that the European official’s current visit to the United States and Canada should be seen as a sounding board on his chances of leading the North Atlantic Alliance. According to La Repubblica, choosing a German would be “an ideal solution for the Americans, since the potential alternative candidates are not very convincing”.

At the same time, the main option for von der Leyen is likely to be re-election as head of the European Commission, which she will lead until next summer. It should be noted that at NATO itself, they expect to keep the current Secretary General, the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg. It is reported that despite the imminent expiration of his mandate (in September this year), NATO members will try to secure him a new mandate at the upcoming July summit in Vilnius.

It is known that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also intends to participate in the race for the post of Secretary General of NATO. The politician himself raised the possibility of leading the North Atlantic Alliance, speaking on the Ukrainian Rada TV channel. According to him, he does not rule out such an option and is ready to compete for this position. “I have to announce that there is such an idea. I consider myself a candidate. This is a very good, important position. Now NATO is stronger than ever”, – leads TASS about the former prime minister.
