Qatar: Qatar’s delegate to the United Nations: Progress on the sustainable development goals is at risk of reversal

Her Excellency Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, confirmed that the progress made in the sustainable development goals is now at risk of reversing due to the multiple ongoing crises, noting that the sustainable development goals were already off track before the pandemic. "COVID-19". This came during Her Excellency’s participation today in the side event on advocacy for sustainable development goals and campaigns for the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, on the sidelines of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries being held in Doha.

Her Excellency pointed out that the Sustainable Development Goals Summit next September is of great importance for three reasons: the first is that it is the first summit to be held since the Covid-19 pandemic, as the effects of the epidemic appeared everywhere and no country was spared from it, and its multidimensional effects severely hit developing countries. , as poor countries suffered from increased hunger, poverty and inequality. She explained that the second reason that makes the Sustainable Development Goals Summit in September of great importance is the multiple crises we face today, represented by climate change, natural disasters, food insecurity, ongoing conflicts, energy and debt crises, in addition to inflation and low growth. Her Excellency mentioned that the third reason for the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals Summit this year is that time is running out, and she said: We have reached the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda, but we are far from where we need to be.

Her Excellency indicated that Member States are expected in September to conduct a comprehensive review and assessment and to provide guidance in order to move forward, pointing out the need for Member States to stress the need for rapid implementation and to make an urgent appeal to take action in order to compensate for what was lost during the Pandemic in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals.

HE the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations said that the message that world leaders should send is that we simply cannot continue to work as usual. We need to move and take urgent action because the importance and future of the ongoing processes in the United Nations itself depends on the rapid implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Her Excellency said that she was honored to be appointed by the President of the United Nations General Assembly as a Co-Facilitator of the Political Declaration of the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit, along with the Permanent Representative to Ireland.

She added: We are fully aware of the challenges of this critical mission, including the fact that there are great hopes pinned on this political declaration, noting that it will be very important to adopt the declaration by consensus, which will indicate that the international community is united behind the 2030 Agenda. We hope to negotiate a political declaration that is inspiring, ambitious, concise, actionable, and contains high-level, transformative recommendations. Her Excellency stressed that the successful Sustainable Development Goals Summit will create the desired momentum for the Future Summit 2024, which in itself is an opportunity not to be repeated in one generation, in order to re-commit and improve global governance appropriate for the future.
