The working paper presented by Dr. Ali Al-Marri, Director of the Quality and Safety Department at the Public Works Authority in the State of Qatar, reviewed Ashghal’s experience in using recycled materials in infrastructure projects, where he explained that the Public Works Authority, after developing the National Strategic Plan 2018-2022, began to focus on On recycling, indicating that the recycling index has been set so that 20% of recycled materials have been used out of the total materials used in projects… He said that the Ashghal Authority began to develop a road map at the beginning of 2018 that begins by identifying places In which the materials resulting from Ashghal projects are stored, where the materials were divided in terms of the possibility and percentages of use until the final plan is reached, noting that within a year and a half, all executive departments in the Ashghal Authority must achieve the required percentage, which is 20%.. .

He continued, saying: The sustainability initiatives that are applied in Ashghal projects include the recycling and use of rubber tires, as Ashghal has achieved during the past years and so far, and the volume of recycled materials and their use in projects has reached 15 million and 200 thousand tons of the resulting materials. of the projects, equivalent to about 53%.

Dr. drew. Al-Marri indicated that the Rawdat Rashid area located in the west of Doha was identified so that all materials outputs from the projects would be transferred, and they were divided in order to facilitate the process of reusing them in projects, and the authority began using 100% of recycled materials, noting that there are some impurities that come out of the materials Resulting from projects, as well as some impurities, the higher the hardness of the material, the greater the possibility of increasing its use in the Authority’s projects. Therefore, only about 30% as a maximum was used in road materials, and according to the directives of the Chairman of the Ashghal Authority, the largest amount of recycled materials should be used recycle them into projects.

He pointed out that Qatar is one of the leading countries in the use of rubber powder in the Authority’s projects, as approximately 1,200 tons of rubber powder resulting from tire recycling were recycled in the Authority’s projects, as this powder is combined and later incorporated into the improved materials for the asphalt mixture, which It is used in road construction projects, noting that the use of recycled rubber tires in road construction will greatly contribute to reducing carbon emissions, which helps promote environmentally friendly practices.

As part of its efforts to promote a culture of sustainability and the application of best environmental practices, Dr. Al-Marri stated that Ashghal had launched the “Green Award” initiative in 2018 to encourage contractors and consultants in the implementation phase to adopt best practices with regard to the environment and sustainability, targeting all categories and axes such as air quality management, groundwater treatment for reuse purposes, carbon emissions reduction, and recycling. Material recycling and cost efficiency.
