The structure of sleep in humans and dogs is similar, and most likely, at night the animal dreams about its daily activities, said Vladimir Golubev, president of the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF).
In an interview with RIA Novosti, he noted that the presence of dreams in mammals is a scientifically proven fact, and like humans, dogs have both rapid and deep sleep. According to him, if the animal moans in a dream, moves its paws and makes other movements, it is dreaming about what it is doing during the day.
He cited research data, according to which the brain processes information received during the day using sleep. According to him, the activity and sleep schedule depends on the age, temperament and breed of the dog.
Golubev noted that puppies need more sleep, while they and young dogs are more active at night. According to the expert, on average, dogs sleep about 70% of the night and 30% of the day.
The duration of sleep for a puppy can reach 16-18 hours, in an adult dog – 14-16, in an older dog – 17-18 hours.
