Volker Wissing wants to block another European project. The Minister of Transport does not understand and does not accept that the driving licenses of people over the age of 70 should only be valid for a limited period of time. Many members of the older generation are “very experienced and careful drivers”.
Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) prefers “personal responsibility”, which is why he denounces EU plans to test the driving ability of older people.
In an interview with Bild am Sonntag, he said: “I don’t really like the idea that older people of a certain age have to take regular fitness tests without any additional reason.
In order to improve road safety, the European Commission wishes to modify the rules relating to the physical and mental aptitude tests of candidate drivers and of the drivers themselves. Age will still play a role, but the presence of certain diseases will play an even bigger role, according to the report.
As a result, in future, driving licenses for people over 70 will be renewed for up to five years – in combination with compulsory tests.
Drivers should also be encouraged to update their “driving skills and knowledge to keep pace with technological developments”, according to the Commission.
“Many seniors are very experienced and careful drivers,” Wissing continues. “I am unequivocally in favor of personal responsibility, which is why I reject compulsory medical tests, as the EU wanted.”
