unsplash.comThe risk of an anthrax epidemic in Russia has been assessed by Anatoly Altshtein, chief researcher at the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology.
Anthrax is a serious, potentially fatal disease. However, it is very difficult to transmit from person to person, so the country is not threatened with an epidemic of this disease. So, the virologist commented on the news of the detection of two cases of anthrax in Chuvashia, writes NEWS.ru.
“There is no anthrax epidemic in humans. They are usually infected by sick animals, such as cows,” the scientist noted.
According to him, anthrax bacteria turn into spores and can “sleep” for centuries, including on farm animal burial sites, as well as livestock burial sites.
