Why is a reference to the American film industry used for the film city of Kaliningrad

The other day it became known about the progress of the project of a film city in Kaliningrad called “Kaliwood”. However, not so long ago there was a ban on using signs in a foreign language. “MK in Kaliningrad” tried to figure out how the name of the city violates the law on the state language.

Recall that on February 28, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed the Law on the State Language, which regulates the use of foreign words. The document was published on the legal information portal.

According to the innovations, it is no longer allowed to use the Russian language as a state of using foreign words if they have an analogue in the Russian language. Unique words will be stored in standard dictionaries.

The aim of the new law is to increase the importance of the Russian language as a state language throughout the country. Monitoring of compliance with its standards by officials and citizens will be strengthened.

Now consider the name of the next film city of Kaliningrad. “Kaliwood” is rather reminiscent of Hollywood or in Latin “Hollywood”. This place is traditionally associated with the American film industry, as many movie studios are located there. Moreover, some famous actors also live here. This word is often used as a metonym for this form of American art.

What this has to do with Kaliningrad is unclear. This may be a reference to the film industry, which has nothing to do with Russian culture, let alone the Russian language.
