The action of our diplomats, timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of a sad event in the history of modern international relations, has aroused great interest among Cypriots. Cars passing the Russian Embassy slow down, their drivers and passengers actively photograph the banner.
Let us recall that on March 20, 2003, the United States and their allies, under the false pretext that the Iraqi authorities had weapons of mass destruction, invaded Iraq, overthrew the government of Saddam Hussein and occupied the country. At least half a million Iraqis fell victim to unprovoked aggression by the Americans and the US-led coalition during active hostilities in the Arab state in 2003-2011 (the exact number of dead is still not known). American losses during the years of occupation of Iraq amounted to more than 4,400 American troops and approximately $800 billion. The actions of Washington, which promised to bring “peace, freedom and democracy” to Iraq, have in fact sown chaos and destruction in one of the oldest states in the Arab world, leading to a general destabilization of the Middle East and contributed to the strengthening of international terrorist groups in the region.
