A throne made of hockey pucks has been erected in the Washington Capitals arena in honor of Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin.
It is made up of 802 pucks and mounted on the bottom of the club’s emblem – a bald eagle. On the bird’s wings, lined with pucks, is the silhouette of Ovechkin and the slogan “The Gr8 Chase”, dedicated to the Russian hockey player’s pursuit of Canadian Wayne Gretzky’s sniper record.
Ovechkin’s 802nd NHL goal in December 2022 moved him into second place on the league’s all-time goalscoring list, beating Canadian Gordie Howe. Now Ovechkin has 819 regular season goals, Gretzky has 894.
