The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organized a workshop entitled "The state of the circular economy in Qatar"in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
The workshop comes within the framework of joint cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Global Green Growth Institute, to promote the circular economy as one of the main work streams to support economic diversification, and to integrate circular principles and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) into the planning and implementation of national development, as well as the strategies and operations of companies in Qatar. .
The workshop aimed to provide basic guides and best practices for developing circular economy policies and frameworks in Qatar, exchanging knowledge and consulting with stakeholders on circular economy initiatives, and the relevant policy landscape in Qatar and at the international level, in addition to enhancing awareness and building capacity on the concept of the circular economy, etc. It means in practice, between stakeholders in the public and private sectors, sharing the findings to achieve international best practices in key sectors. The two-day workshop brought together stakeholders from the government, the private sector, and civil society, to learn about and discuss the circular economy as a catalyst for climate change in Qatar and the goals of economic diversification. On its first day, it reviewed a number of working papers on the reality of the circular economy in Qatar, and future challenges and opportunities. To develop green and sustainable economy strategies and plans.
Mr. Mahmoud Al-Marwani, Assistant Director of the Climate Change Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, said: "The project to promote a circular economy in Qatar, in cooperation with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), is one of the Ministry’s initiatives. The project aims to address challenges and increase opportunities for adopting a circular economy to contribute to economic diversification, climate action, pollution prevention, and resource efficiency in Qatar.". For his part, Dr. Pranab Baruah, Representative of the Global Green Growth Institute in Qatar, highlighted the importance of promoting a circular economy in Qatar for its role in accelerating economic diversification and climate action.
He praised Qatar’s efforts to shift from a linear economy to a more sustainable one, noting that this is in line with the goals of Qatar’s national vision and the goals of the National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change.
Dr. Pranab Baruah presented a working paper entitled "Concepts and alignment with the strategic objectives of the State of Qatar"He reviewed current goals and initiatives in the field of circular economy, including the waste management program, the largest waste treatment landfill in the Middle East in Mesaieed, the launch of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, in addition to the initiative to ban single-use plastics. Baruah spoke about the need to harmonize continuous education and waste management policies in the State of Qatar in order to develop this vital sector, separate waste from the source, and develop organization plans, business support and partnerships between the public and private sectors to innovate and expand in the field of the circular economy.
