Putin ICC Arrest Warrant: The International Criminal Court ie ICC has issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of war crimes. The very next day, Putin was seen roaming the streets of the Ukrainian city of Mariopol.

Proposal to ban ICC in Russia

Russia’s parliament speaker on Saturday proposed a ban on the activities of the International Criminal Court (ICC) after it issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin accusing him of war crimes.

Putin’s aide issued the proposal

Putin’s aide Vyacheslav Volodin said Russian law should be amended to prohibit any ICC activity in Russia. Apart from this, those who give ‘aid and support’ to the ICC should be punished.

need to amend the law

Vyacheslav Volodin in a Telegram post said that it is necessary to amend the law prohibiting any ICC activities on the territory of our country. Volodin said that the United States had legislated to prevent its citizens from being prosecuted by the Hague court and that Russia should continue to do that. He added that any aid or support for the ICC inside Russia should be punishable under the law.

Putin’s arrest would be equivalent to a declaration of war

Russian officials warned that any attempt to arrest Putin, Russia’s paramount leader since the last day of 1999, would be tantamount to declaring war on the world’s biggest nuclear power. The Kremlin says the ICC arrest warrant is an outrageously biased decision, but it is meaningless in relation to Russia.

These countries are not members of ICC

Major powers such as Russia, the United States and China are not members of the ICC, although 123 countries are state parties to the Rome Statute, including Britain, France, Germany and some former Soviet republics such as Tajikistan. Ukraine is not a member of the ICC, although Kiev has granted it jurisdiction to prosecute crimes committed on its territory.

ICC accused

The ICC has held Putin responsible for war crimes committed in Ukraine. However, Russia has repeatedly denied allegations that its military committed atrocities during its year-long invasion of Ukraine. The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Putin on suspicion of illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of people from the territory of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

Will Putin be arrested?

Germany’s Law Minister Marco Buchmann recently said that Putin would be arrested if he came to Germany. Annoyed by this statement, former President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev said that imagine that the leader of a nuclear power country goes to Germany and is arrested there. He further said that this would be like waging war against Russia, then our missiles would wreak havoc on Germany. Proposal to ban ICC in Russia
