Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday decided to dismiss Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant. The relevant statement was released by the Prime Minister’s Office.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided this evening to remove Defense Minister Yoav Galant from his post,” the text reads.
According to The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu’s decision is linked to remarks by Gallant, who the previous day had called for the suspension of judicial reform, which prompted large-scale protests in the country. According to the publication, the prime minister told the head of the defense ministry that he took a step “behind the back of the government” while Netanyahu was visiting the UK.
Earlier, the Walla portal reported that on Sunday protesters broke through a police cordon near the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem.
