In Russia in 2023, a third national currency will appear – the digital ruble, which combines the features of the two existing cash and non-cash rubles. The ruble in digital form makes it possible to make remote payments, as well as settlements on the Internet. Like cash, the digital ruble can be used offline without internet access.
The adoption of the bill on the digital ruble will be postponed from April 1, 2023 to a later date (so far it has been passed only at first reading), and with it the pilot project on real operations with digital currency has been postponed. Anatoly Aksakov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Financial Markets, told RIAMO about it.
The Central Bank also cannot start testing the digital ruble, as there is no relevant regulatory framework. However, the test of the digital ruble does not mean that it will be widely introduced into the lives of ordinary citizens. Authorities do not give exact dates, but some Bank of Russia statements suggest it could happen as early as this year.
