The People’s Republic of China and Honduras announced the establishment of diplomatic relations on 26 March. So far, 182 countries in the world have established diplomatic relations with China, while only 13 countries have so-called “diplomatic relations” with Taiwan’s authorities. This sharp distinction shows that the One-China principle is a consensus in the international community and a recognized norm of international relations. The decision of Honduras is in line with the general trend and the will of the people, and is on the right side of history and on the side of most countries.
There is only one China in the world, the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is an integral part of the territorial land of China. This is an undeniable historical and legal fact. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly No. The 2758 resolution reaffirmed the One-China principle. Over the years, from Panama to El Salvador, from Nicaragua to Honduras, so-called “diplomatic countries” of Taiwan’s officials have decided one after another to “sever diplomatic relations” with it and establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. Or decided to restore. These are political choices based on the One-China principle and in line with the general trend of the world, which coincides with the interests of those countries and reflects the will of the people. As Honduran Foreign Minister Reyna said, “The establishment of diplomatic relations with China is a political decision, and the world is always making progress in this direction.”
Honduras established unconditional diplomatic relations with China, which represents the strong desire of Latin American countries for development with dignity. Honduras is an important country in Central America. Presently he is facing developmental issues. The US has always regarded Latin America as its “backyard”, and has long been promoting the “Monroe Doctrine” and brutally interfering in the internal affairs of Latin American countries. At the same time, America has also hindered friendly cooperation with other countries of Latin American countries.
In 2020, the US passed the so-called “Taipei Act” and threatened retaliation against countries that seek to establish diplomatic relations with China. The US immediately dispatched a presidential advisor to visit Honduras after Honduran President Xiomara Castro publicly expressed a desire to establish diplomatic relations with China. Reuters said in a report that “the US is trying to block Honduras from implementing a plan to ‘turn to Beijing’.” Such undue interruption proves futile. The “New York Times” remarked that Honduras’ “severing of diplomatic ties” with Taiwan is a blow to Taiwan and a defeat to the US.
In today’s world, more and more countries understand that establishing diplomatic relations with China is the trend of the times and the aspiration of the people. It can achieve win-win on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, which is solely for the fundamental and long-term interests of our country and people. Les Tome, deputy speaker of the Honduras Congress, said that the people of Honduras have high hopes for the development of China-Honduras relations. He hopes that the relations between the two countries will be closer and the exchanges in economic, political, cultural and other fields will be further strengthened. According to the latest news, China welcomes Honduras to join the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and to promote exchanges and practical cooperation within the relevant framework . At the same time, China will expand Honduran imports, encourage participation and investment in infrastructure construction, giving priority to projects that benefit the livelihood of the Honduran people.
The Honduran side pledges to adhere to the one-China principle and is willing to work with the Chinese side to further strengthen bilateral relations and push forward cooperation in various fields between the two countries at full speed. This shows the sincerity of both sides to promote and good start to bilateral relations. China-Honduras practical cooperation, mutual benefit and win-win will not only benefit both peoples, but also have a significant impact on strengthening solidarity and cooperation of developing countries and promoting the democratization of international relations. Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. Adhering to the One-China principle is an international righteousness. The “Taiwan Independence” force will surely fail. No one should underestimate the determination, determination and strong ability of the Chinese people to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. More and more countries will stand on the right side of history.
