Dharamshala: Hollywood star Richard Gere, president of the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), will participate in two events in Washington along with members of the US Congress to drum up support for Tibet. Among Tuesday’s events is a Congressional-Executive Commission hearing on China, which will be attended by democratically elected leaders of Tibetans in exile. Four members of Congress introduced the resolution of the Tibet-China Conflict Act. Gair’s visit there is part of the events surrounding Tibet Lobby Day coordinated by ICT.
Gere will testify at the event along with Penpa Tsering, Sikyong (chairman) of the Central Tibetan Administration, which provides democratic governance for Tibetans in exile. Other witnesses are Lhadon Tethong and Tenzin Dorjee of the Tibet Action Institute. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, House Committee on Rules Ranking Member Jim McGovern, D-Mass., Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., to highlight the plight of Tibetans Will host a bipartisan press conference with Gair.
Lawmakers will discuss a proposal for their bipartisan, bicameral legislation, the Tibet-China Conflict Act, to allow Tibetan and Chinese Communist Party leaders to achieve their long-standing goal of peacefully resolving their differences through dialogue.
