Tove Jansson’s heirs revoke Moomin license in Russia

– Published on:

The Finnish company Moomin Characters, owned by the heirs of writer Tove Jansson, due to anti-Russian sanctions, has not renewed the license to use Moomin characters in Russia. About this with reference to company representatives reported Vpost edition.

The agency Brand4rent, which represented the interests of Moomin Characters in Russia, confirmed that the registration of new licenses was temporarily suspended “due to what is happening in the world”. The Moomin brand page on the agency’s website is currently missing. Instead of Moomins, they offer to issue a license for Cheburashka, which, according to agency employees, is now very popular.

The Moomin brand is based on the fairy tale characters of writer and artist Tove Jansson. They are mythical creatures leading a human way of life. The first Moomin book, Little Trolls and a Big Flood, was published in 1945. Books about the Moomintrolls have been translated into over 50 languages, and cartoons about them are shown in 124 countries around the world. Moomin Characters was founded by Tove Jansson and his brother Lars in 1958. The management is still carried out by the heirs of the founders.

The company’s main licensed products are tableware and souvenirs from the Fiskars Group, with the brand’s most famous item being Moomin porcelain cups, which VPost says remains one of the main Finnish souvenirs. In 2013, Moomin Characters in an interview with Fontanka appreciated the company’s income comes only from products with 400 million fairy-tale characters. At the same time, Moomin Characters is proud of the fact that they basically do not conduct advertising campaigns.

  1. Who do they punish? Putin? No, the Russian children who were not lucky enough to have been born in a wrong country.
    Common sense is not inherited.

    • That is rich, considering your user name “Country 404” is a meme about Ukraine not existing (country not found). Russoids deserve to have Moomin mugs after, let us say, 80 years of good conduct. Only then will we accept them back into the circle of human beings. Even then they, like the Germans, will be subjected to snippy comments about their past misdeeds.
