The US President pledges $690 million to support democracy and fight corruption

US President Joe Biden pledged $690 million to advance democracy programs around the world, fight corruption, advance human rights, develop technology that improves democracy, and support free and fair elections.

Today, at the opening of the second virtual summit on democracy, Biden said that democracy requires serious and continuous work, noting that the world is going through a turning point towards a better democracy thanks to the commitment of world leaders and the insistence of people on democracy.

And the website of the American Al-Hurra channel quoted what it described as "senior official" In the administration of President Biden, he said that the US administration is seeking to take advantage of the two-day summit, to draw attention to the use of "Technology is for democracy, not against it".

The same official revealed, that "The administration has also reached agreement with 10 other countries on guidelines for how governments can use surveillance technology".

In a joint statement with South Korean President Yoon Seok-yul, before the start of the summit, Biden and Seok-yul announced that Seoul will host the third edition of the Democracy Summit. The two presidents said "Governments participating in the summit made hundreds of commitments to reform laws and policies, support transparent and accountable institutions, and contribute additional support to democratic reformers, journalists, and activists.".

Leaders of about 120 countries are participating in this summit, most of whose dialogues are held via the Internet, with an increase of more than 7 times the number of those who participated in the first summit held in 2021.
