The President of Kazakhstan proposed Smailov for of head of government

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Acting Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov to the Majilis (lower house of the Kazakh Parliament) as the new head of government. The Kazakh leader said so during the chamber’s plenary session on Thursday.

Recall that the elections of the deputies of the chamber took place on March 19. According to the CEC, most seats – 62 out of 98 – in the Majilis went to the largest party, Amanat. According to the constitution of the republic, the previous government resigned before the newly elected Majilis. The head of state instructed the former cabinet to carry out its functions until the creation of the next composition of the executive power. Tokayev also suggested that the Amanat party appoint the next prime minister, but according to law, the appointment of the head of government is the prerogative of the president.
