White House: US has no way to expel Russia from UN Security Council

– Published on:

At a briefing for reporters, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the United States had no legal basis to exclude Russia from the Security Council. UN. She responded to a question about Russia’s upcoming Security Council presidency in April and added that it was more of a ceremonial post, which is handed down month by month in alphabetical order. The United States itself will chair the Security Council in August 2023.

“Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, and there are no real international legal means to change this situation,” TASS said.

Jean-Pierre also urged Russia to behave professionally during the presidency and to continue its important work in the Security Council. She noted that the United States expects Russia to continue disinformation and distract from the situation in Ukraine. The White House official believes that a country that violates the UN Charter and invades the territory of its neighbor does not deserve a seat on the UN Security Council.
