According to data from the Central Association of Artisan Bakers, last year more bakeries disappeared from the German market than new businesses were registered. At the end of 2022, there were just over 9,600 bakeries on the register of artisans. This is around 3.6% less than a year earlier.
According to 2022 data, 780 bakeries disappeared from the market, while only 422 new businesses were created during the same period. Only 380 bakeries opened in 2021.
At the same time, the association’s president, Michael Wippler, noted that despite the difficult conditions of the past year, young entrepreneurs look to the future with confidence. Even if the persistent energy crisis and the rise in commodity prices continue to weigh heavily on companies.
First and foremost, argues Wippler, political conditions need to be improved, with much-needed cuts to bureaucracy on the agenda.
According to the association, the industry’s turnover last year was around 16.27 billion euros. This is 9.4% more than the previous year. However, the increase was mainly due to the general price increase.
